The Jags went to Tampa and looked pretty good. This week I talk about David Garrard and how our offense could be fun to watch. Also the scary thought of Reggie Nelson being our starting safety.

This time of year is the best. Every NFL fan has hopes that their team will play well enough to make it to the playoffs and from there who knows. The Jags played their first preseason game and this podcast I talk about that game and what to look for with the Jaguars this year.

Del Rio or Draft?

If you have listened to the podcast you know at the end of last year I was ready for Del Rio to get the ax. For all the time he’s been here, the Jaguars have been an average team only making the playoffs once. Most coaches with his record would of been fired. However I got to wondering this offseason is it Del Rio or the way the Jaguars have drafted?

Over the past several years the Jaguars have been one of if not the worst drafting teams in the NFL. From the Shack Harris era the only first rounders still on the team are Reggie Nelson and Marcedes Lewis and Nelson is on his last legs here.

With the lack of talent that the Jaguars have brought in you would have to think that Del Rio has done a good job just making this team .500.

People on the other side may question Del Rio’s ability to grow players. Were all these players busts or if they had a different coach would they have grown into good NFL players. This question takes us back to the Leftwich days when the question was if Byron was that bad or was it the wide receivers.

This year will go along way to determining Del Rio’s future with the Jaguars. I personally don’t think he has to make the playoffs but I do think the team needs to show improvement. If Del Rio has this team finishing strong I think he gets another year but if the Jaguars finish like they did last year it will be hit the road Jack.

Building the Right Way

With ticket sales the way they are it would be easy for Gene Smith and the Jaguars to draft “sexy” picks. Picking players in position that would excite even the modest fan. Instead in the last two drafts the Jaguars have used their top picks to draft some of the most “unsexy” positions on the team but they are doing it the right way.

Not many fans get excited about drafting offensive linemen. Yet in Gene Smith’s first draft that’s what he drafted. With his first pick in the 2009 draft he got Eugene Monroe and followed that up with Eben Britton. Then this year the Jaguars focused on what I would consider the second most “unsexy” position on the team (other than kickers) and thats the middle of the defensive line by drafting Tyson Alualu in the first and then using their next pick to get D’Anthony Smith.

I bring all this out to draw out the point that the Jaguars could of made picks that might would of drawn more fans but instead went with a solid plan to build a winning team. Just about any coach or GM will tell you that good football teams are built in the trenches.

I for one am very excited that the Jaguars made the picks they did. Also I am very much looking forward to see how last years rookie grow this year and of course how well this years crop of rookies will fair.

Jags should of nabbed McNabb

Before McNabb got traded to the Redskins I was shocked that the Jaguars didn’t seem to have any interest in him or at least show any interest. Maybe they did but just didn’t have enough to pull the trade off. Why might you ask did I think getting McNabb would of been a huge deal?

The first is obvious, McNabb is a top 5 quarterback. Why Eagles fans wanted him gone so badly is beyond me. McNabb had played well with receivers that were less than stellar or proven. However the fact that McNabb is a great quarterback isn’t even the main reason I thought the Jaguars should get him.

The Jaguars need an excitement about the team to sell tickets. Bringing in a top level quarterback like McNabb would of brought excitement. One of the things the Jaguars have missed is a marketable guy. Sure MJD is that now and he does a great job but bringing in McNabb gives you two.

As far as McNabb goes it will be interesting to see how he does in Washington. Also it is now reported that Jaguars are showing interest in Jason Campbell. As far as I can tell the only thing better with him than Garrard is that he is three years younger.

Fan Conference Call with Gene Smith

The Jaguars are trying new things to reach their fans. One of those was a conference call, which all the season ticket holders were invited to attend. I had recorded the call but the Jaguars released the mp3 version, so if you were not able to make it in the call hear what you missed.

Renewing your season tickets is one exciting and depressing event.  While you look forward to getting go to the Jaguars games, paying for the tickets is never fun.  I just renewed my season tickets today and thought you might want to see the chart that is listed on jaguars.com, for season ticket sales.  This is a big year for the Jaguars.  Hopefully we will avoid all the blackouts from last year and put the NFL on notice that Jags fans love their team.

Tebow and Jags: Bad fit for both

I’m not sure about you but I’m sick of hearing about Tim Tebow from both sides.  You know on one side are the people that think that Tebow will come into Jacksonville with a smile and save the franchise.  The other group of people don’t seem to think that Tebow is skilled enough to be a NFL waterboy.  I seem to think that Tebow could be a good to great NFL quarterback, I don’t think that will happen in Jacksonville.

If the Jaguars were to draft Tim Tebow they are drafting a lot of problems.  Not problems that Tebow himself will bring but that the fans will bring.  As soon as David Garrard or the offense has a bad day then the fans will be up in arms wanting Tim Tebow to start.  If you don’t think so it was already starting to happen last season while Tebow was in college!

The problem with this is that it creates a divided fan base and could be a problem in the locker room.  Also it is very unfair to David Garrard who did just play in his first Pro Bowl (ok so maybe he didn’t deserve to go but he played well.)  So now you have a big problem.

Tebow really needs to go someplace that he can be a backup for awhile and work on his game.  Somewhere that he isn’t expected to step up and play right away.  The Colts would be a great place not only cause he wouldn’t be expected to start but also because he could learn for Peyton Manning.

Bottom line is if the Jaguars office is smart they pass on Tebow.  Let him go somewhere that works better for him and save the francise the headache of a divided fanbase.

AFC South QB's respesenting

How about the AFC South and their quarterbacks?  I know a couple of quarterbacks have backed out but going into last weekend the quarterbacks for the AFC were Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub, and Vince Young.  Not back all AFC South quarterback but Peyton can’t play because of the Super Bowl, so his replacement David Garrard.

Now I know that David Garrard really doesn’t deserve to go this year but with Brady and Rivers sitting it out then he gets his chance.  How amazing is it that all the AFC Pro Bowl quarterback and the Super Bowl quarterback are all coming from that same division?  I didn’t check but I’m not sure that has ever happened before.

That does show that the AFC South is a pretty strong division.  The Jaguars who were suppose to be rebuilding finished last in the division with a 7-9 recored.  Not too bad.
